Artist Statement
Everyone has some sort of internal struggle that they try to cope with, whether it is regarding their body image or their social standings. The Journey to Self Discovery is my personal journey with my anxiety and body image. Each photo represents different symptoms or feelings about myself such as feelings of helplessness and fear of abandonment. Most people who have a mental illness or are unhappy with certain aspects of their life all tend to do one thing, cover it up. For example, I take medication to help with my anxiety at times and even with that I still feel like the world is ending at times, but by wearing makeup and wearing clothes that stand out or cracking jokes in any kind of situation are ways that I try to cover up and hide so people can't see the real me who is always afraid of what people think of me.
This series involves self portraits of myself and how it was shot was by setting up the camera to its correct position and settings, and then setting a timer that was long enough for me to get in position and ready. Some shots were more difficult than others, but overall I believe that this body of work really helped me get through the rough times.
The goal of this project is to lets those who know me and those who don't see me for what I am, and understand me better. I also want those who struggle with any kind of problem to know that it is okay to talk to someone and to get those boxed up feelings out somehow. Document your life, your problems, your dreams, and see things in a different light. By photographing myself I had to sit down and look at hundreds of photos of myself and in a way it was therapeutic.
